The tin coating is used both inside and outside of the Irani chai set to prevent corrosion of the copper. The tin coating serves as a protective layer between the metal and the chai. The tin coating improves the conductivity of copper cookware, lowering fuel expenses. Regular re-tinning intervals also keep the tea's flavor fresh.

Irani Chai, also known as Hyderabadi Dum Chai, is a sweet, milky, and creamy Indian tea that is commonly referred to as Irani Tea. In the nineteenth century, Persian immigrants carried it to the Indian subcontinents. It has evolved through time to suit Indian preferences.
